Curricula
Working with leading economic educators, the Powell Center has developed a set of curriculum standards for each grade level. Educators are invited to download these standards, and are encouraged to apply them within the classroom. By meeting these objectives at each grade level, students begin learning economics in kindergarten and continue learning economics for the rest of their lives.
For a short cut on concepts attainable at each grade level, we have included a staircase to success which gives a quick overview of these age-appropriate concepts.
Curricula for several groups of age ranges are available by clicking the links below. The curricula will open in pdf files that are indexed by grade level. For a shortcut to each grade level, be sure to click on the Bookmarks section of your reader.
At the introductory level (grades K-4), students will be exposed to economic education to build the foundation for lifelong learning. At this level, students can develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills they will need to participate successfully in the economy.

At the intermediate level (grades 5-8), the mission is to extend students' understanding of basic economic concepts by integrating economics curriculum into content area classes, and to introduce students to the relationship between economic freedom and political freedom. This curriculum is designed to encourage economically literate students by helping them develop an economic way of thinking as they make decisions in their lives.
Intermediate level goals include:
- Continued mastery of basic economic concepts.
- Understanding of the role economics has played in the development of civilization(s) throughout history.
- Knowledge of current world economies.
- Understanding of the role of economics in America's history, present and future.
- Understanding of the mutual benefits of trade and interdependence.
- Application of economic reasoning through playing the Stock Market Game.
- Examination of economics and the environment in science classes through an economics addendum developed for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation lessons.

At the advanced level (grades 9-12), the Center's vision is to produce economically literate high school graduates who possess an understanding of the interdependence of American democracy and free enterprise, and who have a strong economic education base with which to understand the world, make decisions in the world, and affect the world.
Goals of this curriculum include:
- Continuation of the students' study of economics by providing core high school economics courses as well as opportunities for college-level coursework.
- Availability of experiences to foster students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes as economic thinkers.
- Enabling of students to hone their skills in organizing and analyzing economic information.
- Preparation of graduates with the knowledge and understanding needed as consumers, workers, producers, investors, savers, and citizen voters in a global economy.

Urban Economic Education Curriculum
Through working with teachers who have attended our Teacher Summer Economics Institute, the Powell Center has developed a curriculum specifically for urban students. By using materials that are appropriate to a student's developmental level, abilities and age, we hope to make the vital connection between being economic thinkers and responsible citizens.
